Goodbye, Lines!

Let’s do an experiment together: look into the mirror and scrutinise your skin – do you see any fine lines?
“No, I don’t.” – Good for you! Keep up the maintenance.
“Yes I do. They’re around/underneath (insert area) and I want them to disappear!” – Don’t worry, just keep on reading.
Most common areas of fine lines:
  • Between the eyes
  • On the forehead
  • Along the sides of the mouth
  • Underneath the eye contour
  • On the sides of the eyes
“But I haven’t even hit 30 yet!” you might say. However, the sad but true fact is that fine lines can develop even before you reach your twenties, due to dehydration and external aggressions like prolonged exposure to sunlight.
I know girls as young as 18 who have deep-set horizontal lines on their foreheads, or smile lines (those that run along the sides of the mouth) that are very pronounced. If you have dry skin, you’re more prone to getting wrinkles at a younger age, but always remember: if you feel that your skin needs an anti-ageing product, you don’t have to wait until you’re 25 to start!
A lot of experts we’ve talked to state dehydration as one of the major culprits of premature development of fine lines. When your skin is dry, your cells shrivel up, causing an uneven, lined surface which you see on your face as fine lines.
Here’s how to banish those lines and bring back that bouncy-smooth complexion:
#1 – Incorporate a hydrating product into your skincare regime.
For dry skin: Choose a creamy hydrating cream for night-time to replenish any moisture that is lost during the day. For daytime, a fluid emulsion will keep your skin hydrated without weighing it down.

For oily skin: Go for a hyaluronic-based lotion or toner that absorbs deep into the skin without making it sticky or shiny. Two to three times a week, apply a gel-based sleeping mask to plump up your skin.

#2 – Drink more water.
Yes, it sounds clich├ęd but it’s true. Our bodies need at least 2 litres of water a day to function properly. If you’re not a fan of chugging down plain water, try green tea instead, which contains less caffeine and is packed with antioxidants. (Tip: use hot water, not boiling water to steep green tea. Boiling water is too hot and will render the antioxidants in the tea ineffective!) On hot days like these, coconut water (that’s air kelapa muda for you) is a great isotonic alternative that replenishes fluids without the guilty calories.
#3 – Start investing in a lightweight anti-ageing eye cream.
The skin around your eye contour is extremely thin and delicate. It’s so delicate that even moisturisers are deemed too heavy for the skin. So if you’ve been using your face cream as an eye cream, STOP! The oils in the face cream will cause whiteheads and milia seeds to grow underneath the eyes. Choose one in a gel-cream texture that has anti-dark circles and anti-puffiness properties, which is suitable for our Malaysian weather.

#4 – Indulge in mask-time more often.
You’d be surprised how few women actually take the time to apply a facial mask, even though it only takes a few minutes! A few ladies I talked to said they only do this at home once a month (!!!!) My recommendation is to apply a mask (either type, sheet, cream or gel) twice a week. It doesn’t even have to be on your face for ages – a simple 10-minute mask will suffice. Do this after you’ve removed all traces of makeup and have double-cleansed your face, always on a clean canvas! Within a couple of weeks, you’ll definitely notice a dramatic improvement in skin texture and tone.

With these simple tips, you’ll be able to put off wrinkles for a longer period of time. There are no ugly women, only lazy ones! :)
