Head-to-toe Sun Protection

[As published on HERE]

In a country where we experience a tropical climate all year long, sun protection is one of the most important things to practice. Did you know that between 11am to 4pm, the sun’s rays are considered the most harmful? So when you’re going out for lunch, be sure to reapply sunblock, or at least use an umbrella.

Now, I’m not going to go into detail about the explanation of SPF (which you can read about here). Ideally, for Malaysia, SPF50 would be the best choice. There is also speculations that anything above SPF60 is just a marketing gimmick, but hey – if it works for your skin and prevents pigmentation, we’re not complaining.
What I’m going to bring up, however, is a common problem all of us have faced at one point. One of the worst things about sunblock is the white, greasy film it leaves on the skin’s surface. Thankfully, there are products out there that do the job without doing so.

For the face
Senka Mineral Perfect UV Gel, RM39.90, Watsons
SPF50 PA+++
Even though it’s called UV Gel, there’s nothing gel-like about this sunblock, which is rather misleading. It’s a white fluid that absorbs clean without a whitish cast. The addition of baby powder to the formula also gives skin a nice, matte finish.

For lips
Maybelline Baby Lips Lip Balm, RM10.90
A lot of my friends swear by Maybelline Baby Lips. They say the moisturising effect lasts longer than other lipbalms, and doesn’t feel sticky or waxy. Plus, they come in such adorable colours and delectable flavours (orange, cherry, mint and berry) that you’ll be spoilt for choice.

For the body
Nivea Body Intensive Moisture Serum, RM18.90
SPF25 PA+++
This is by far one of the best moisturisers with sun protection ever invented. It absorbs quickly and doesn’t leave a greasy stain on your clothes. Even after reapplication, skin still doesn’t feel weighed down. Great for our humid climate.

For hair
Sunplay Watery Cool Mist, RM49.90
SPF75 PA+++
Sunburn on your scalp can hurt – a lot. But then again, it’s rather gross to rub sunblock on your scalp and get your roots all goopy, so your best bet is a spray-type sunblock that reaches the delicate skin on the scalp. Of course, there are sunscreen products for hair in the market, but they’re either too expensive for our liking, or too hard to find in times of need. Do remember, though, to deeply-cleanse your scalp after that to remove any residue or oil.

UV-protect clothes
Now, even clothes come with sun protection technology! Uniqlo carries a line of basic items with UV-Cut technology, which is said to filter 90% of the sun’s harmful UV rays so you can continue to frolic in the sun and worry less about sun damage.

UV-protect umbrellas
Back in the day, UV umbrellas were as unflattering as umbrellas got. Remember the bulky ones with a silver surface that was supposed to reflect all types of harmful UV rays? Well, the new breed of UV umbrellas are sleeker, trendier and best of all (for us ladies!), foldable. Granted, they’re more expensive than the usual parasols, but you get shade and sunblock in one.
