The SOS Essential Kit: What Every Woman Needs

[As published on Emmagem.com HERE]

Imagine this: it’s 7pm and you’re about to get off work, and meet your friends for dinner. Your eyeliner is smudged, and your beautifully-drawn eyebrows have dissolved into nothingness. Obviously, just touching up with pressed powder won’t cut it.

What do you do?
a) Don’t even bother about it anymore. You’re so used to smudged makeup already.
b) Pile on the pressed powder anyway and hope nobody notices your shorter-than-usual brows.
c) Take out your trusty pouch of SOS essentials from your drawer and arrive for dinner looking like a million dollars.
Yes, ladies – there is an option. Smudged, shoddy makeup does nothing to boost confidence, especially over dinner and drinks (you never know who you’ll meet, right?). That’s why it’s super important to have a ready pouch of makeup essentials that you can bring anywhere. I’d rank this pouch to be as important as your handphone.

Introducing… the SOS essential kit.

Why you need one:
  1. You can leave it in your desk drawer at work for necessary touch-ups
  2. It can be stowed away in the glove compartment in your car.
  3. You can bring it on short weekends and not worry about forgetting to pack anything.
  4. Think of it as a fixer-upper that will instantly revive your look.
Everything in this kit exists for a reason, and whatever you don’t need doesn’t go in here. It should be light, compact, spill-proof, melt-proof and most importantly, USEFUL. That stub of an eyeliner you just can’t bear to throw away even though it’s nearing its end, because it applies and stays like a dream? Into the kit it goes! That tiny tube of BB cream sample that you don’t have an occasion to use? Yep, add it to the kit. You get the drill.
However, a friendly note of advice: leave all the luxe, designer products (which are always heavier and bulkier) at home. That lovely Guerlain Meteorites canister isn’t made for heavy-duty transit.
The SOS kit is supposed to contain products you wouldn’t think twice about lugging around. Heck, they don’t have to look pretty. All the kit has to do is serve its purpose, and into the drawer/glove compartment it goes, until the next time. The less space it takes up, the better. Also, go for lightweight packaging whenever possible.

Creating your SOS essential kit
For starters, are you a makeup or a skincare kind of girl?
The makeup kit should include what you use on a daily basis. (ie. If you don’t use this, people will either assume you’re sick, or think you just woke up). To save space, choose double-duty items, like a brow pencil with a spoolie brush on the other end, or a cream blusher that doubles as a lip tint.
The skincare kit will come in handy if you’re spending the night somewhere else and have not had time to pack anything from home.

‘I already have all this at home, why do I need another set of similar products?’
Just like how you have a hand cream beside your bed and another on your office table, the SOS kit works the same way. It’s too troublesome to pack and unpack the same batch of products every time you commute between home and work, so it makes sense to have the essentials with you, so you’ll always be in your element.
