Beauty Trend Redux: The Best Of 2013

[As published on HERE]
As 2013 nears its end, let’s take a look at the best of what the beauty world had to offer us this year. If you haven’t tried these trends, now’s a good time as any!

Oxblood Lips
Oxblood Lips
The statement lip got a more grown-up, slightly gothic update, with celebrities and designers preferring oxblood to red. Oxblood, a dark shade of brownish-red with purple undertones, akin to burgundy or wine, was the preferred choice of lip colour. The best part about this colour is that it flatters all skin tones. If you’re fair like Rooney Mara, medium-toned like Kate Bosworth, or honey-toned like Rihanna, you’ll find a flattering shade of oxblood lipstick that won’t make you look like an extra from Twilight. Go for a creamy finish that won’t dry up your lips.

Bold Brows

Thanks to supermodel Cara Delevigne, it was cool to leave those brows unplucked again. Her bold, often-unkempt brows sparked a trend for natural-looking eye makeup around the world, as girls began to emulate her look. Truth be told, it’s not a new look. Celebrities like Elizabeth Taylor, Audrey Hepburn, Brooke Shields and Camilla Belle rocked the bushy-browed look long before it was cool.
With pencil-thin brows out the window, we’re all breathing big sighs of relief. Even with minimal makeup on, bold brows make you look put-together.

Eye-Enlarging Makeup
Eye Enlarging Makeup
We didn’t see much of crazy-coloured eye makeup this year. Even during the summer, colours were more muted and wearable, kept to a minimum with just thin slicks of bright eyeliner. What we’ve got our eyes on, however, are eyeshadow palettes that are specially designed to enhance (not camouflage) the eyes. Maquillage released a 5-colour palette based on the concept of ‘colour harmony’. When used together, these shades accentuate and define eyes so they look 110% bigger. We’re also loving Urban Decay’s latest Naked 3 palette, with 12 rose-hued shades specially blended to recreate the ‘golden hour’ effect of sunset.

Glitter Nail Polish
Glitter Nail Polish
This year was big on glitter nail polish, thanks to its booming popularity on Pinterest. Less arts-and-crafts and more abstract art, glitter came in all shapes, sizes and colour. Instead of playing matchy-matchy, colour contrasts took centerstage. Nail polish makers literally packed rainbows into a bottle.
We particularly loved Deborah Lippmann’s speckled polishes; pastel nail lacquers infused with different shades of glitter to look like robin’s eggs.

The ‘Miley’ Quiff
Miley Cyrus Quiff
It’s about time everyone gave Miley Cyrus a break. She grew out of her Hannah Montana phase, and that’s not necessarily a bad thing. At 21, she seems to be pretty sure of what she wants, and living under a constant spotlight is not easy (look at Justin Bieber, who seems to be on the verge of falling apart, but I feel sorry for him too). The best thing she did for her career was to chop her hair off, instantly taking her from country lass to edgy rebel. Let the pictorial evidence speak for itself:
