2014 Colour Forecast: What's Hot in Beauty This Year?

[As published on Emmagem.com HERE]
Each year, we eagerly anticipate Pantone’s new colour forecast. Their prediction for 2014 doesn’t disappoint either, though there are some marked differences from last year’s selections. While 2013 was all about bright, solid colours, things seem to have toned down somewhat for 2014, with more pastels that remind us of soft-focus Instagram filters that make everything look prettier.

Just last month, Pantone named Radiant Orchid as their Colour of the Year. Described as “an enchanting harmony of fuchsia, purple and pink undertones, Radiant Orchid inspires confidence and emanates great joy, love and health. It is a captivating purple, one that draws you in with its beguiling charm.”
Many of us have a love-hate relationship with lilac, especially so for Asians with yellow-undertoned skin. Lilac makes us look sickly pale, and makes our complexion look sallow. But Radiant Orchid seems like a new lease of hope; its warm undertones (more red than blue) lend a pinkish radiant glow to the skin. According to Pantone, this hue goes well with red, and complements its sister shades of lavender, purple and pink.
With this year’s ‘IT’ shade, we might just be able to embrace lilac in all its glory.

Radiant Orchid Makeup
Tip: In order not to look washed-out, combine lilac with other complementary shades of purple. Keep the focus on either eyes or lips, not both. The best look, however, is to define eyes with lilac (using it as a highlight shade), and leave the darker, more vivid colours for your lips instead.

Radiant Orchid Manicure
Tip: Break the monotony with a contrasting shade of turquoise on one nail, or if you have a stead hand, go all out with a floral-inspired manicure that’s reminiscent of Cath Kidston fabrics. Not a fan of lilac? Choose metallic mauve, which has purplish undertones.
