The Best Base Makeup Products - EVER!

[As published on HERE]
Base makeup is indeed a very important aspect of achieving a perfect finished look. Too little, and your complexion looks sallow. Too much, and you risk looking like a geisha/tanned leather couch. That’s why we’ve put together a list of the creme de la creme of base makeup products, so you don’t have to find the best from trial and error. Take it from us, these are definitely keepers you’ll fall in love with!

Laura Mercier Oil-Free Foundation Primer, RM139, available at Ken’s Apothecary
Unlike other type of primers, Laura Mercier’s signature foundation primer is presented in the form of a lightweight gel that applies (and feels) like a moisturiser. Specially designed for oily, sensitive and acne-prone skin, the primer contains green tea extract, cucumber and vitamins A, C and E to soothe and refresh. Even when used on its own, it’s a treat for the skin.

Revlon PhotoReady Primer, RM59
You know how some silicone-based primers leave a funky slippery film on the surface of your skin? Well, this one doesn’t do that. The totally affordable price is also a plus. The PhotoReady Primer comes in two types – Perfecting (smoothes out skin texture, conceals pores) and Color Correcting (with added brightening benefits). It’s oil-free, talc-free and fragrance-free, and is thus suitable for ladies with sensitive skin.

Shiseido Perfect Refining Foundation, RM130
Touted as one of Shiseido’s best foundations ever, the Perfect Refining Foundation comes in a compact box-like bottle with a nozzle for easy product dispensing. It comes in 18 shades (according to the international website, though number of shades available locally may differ), and provides medium coverage without making your face look like a powdery mask. Instead, you get a matte finish that lasts for up to 15 hours. The only downside is that fingerprints show up very clearly on the shiny black packaging.

NARS Sheer Glow Foundation
Since NARS is now available in Malaysia, it’s only apt to talk about the brand’s most-loved foundation. The Sheer Glow Foundation goes on easily without streaking, and coverage is buildable. Its strength lies in its brightening and radiance-enhancing properties, which gives the complexion a soft, luminous glow. It might be a tad on the pricey side, but judging by how well it hides flaws, this one is definitely a keeper.

Bobbi Brown Creamy Concealer Kit, RM135
One of the biggest gripes we have about concealer is that it can leave a cakey, whitish cast around the undereye area. Bobbi Brown’s concealer is creamy enough to allow even blending, but pigmented enough to hide even the most stubborn spots and dark circles.  And it doesn’t cake, even after a long day. This kit comes with a pale yellow-hued setting powder (which some people love and some hate), but if you don’t wear a lot of makeup and are always on-the-go, it definitely comes in handy.

Cle de Peau Beaute Concealer
If you have pronounced dark circles, this is a splurge that’s well worth it. The over-RM150 price tag might leave you weak in the knees, but Cle de Peau’s cult favourite didn’t win Best Concealer in InStyle’s Best Beauty Buys 2013 for nothing. (Point to note: it also won Best Concealer in 2012, 2011, 2010, 2009, 2008, 2006 and 2005) Still not convinced? Some Internet research will provide ample proof about its Holy Grail status.

Loose Powder
Guerlain Meteorites Pearls, RM195
Every woman has to try Guerlain’s iconic product at least once in her life. We say at least once, because once you’re hooked, there’s no turning back. What makes it better (or worse? We can’t decide) is that every season, Guerlain releases a limited-edition version that makes us willingly part with our hard-earned cash. The best thing about these delectable-looking pearls is that a light dusting results in a radiant complexion that’s so believable, nobody can tell it’s makeup.

bareMinerals Mineral Veil, RM109, available at Sephora
Mineral makeup is said to be the best for women who have fragile skin/acne. Thanks to Sephora, we can get bareMinerals in Malaysia. The bestselling Mineral Veil works two ways – it can be used before foundation to absorb excess oil on the face, or after to set makeup for a line-free complexion. The Original shade goes on almost colourless, so it won’t interfere with your foundation.
