Never Underestimate The Importance Of Using A Toner!

[As published on HERE]

Toners are probably the most-neglected skincare product of all time. We cleanse and moisturise religiously, but for some unknown reason, we overlook the importance of a toner. So, what does a toner do exactly?
Top 3 reasons why you need to use a toner
1. Toners help remove leftover gunk on your skin.
Sometimes cleansing isn’t enough, especially if you rely heavily on a multipurpose cleanser that claims to remove makeup, cleanse and tone at the same time. There is no such thing. However, you can do the extra cleanup work by gently wiping your face and neck with a cotton pad saturated with toner after cleansing. This helps to remove any traces of makeup or waterproof sunblock from your skin’s surface for a thoroughly clean canvas.
2. Toners help prep your skin to absorb your serum/moisturiser better.
Ideally, you should apply serum or moisturiser when your skin is still moist from the toner. Damp skin absorbs skincare products better than dry skin, so don’t skip toner, not even when you’re feeling lazy! You can match your toner to your skin concern, but our experience tells us that the best toners to opt for are the hydrating ones as they deliver a punch of extra-lightweight moisture deep into the skin.
3. Toners are oily-skinned girls’ best friends.
When you apply toner, try gently buffing oily-prone areas with the cotton pad to prevent skin from turning greasy quickly. This also helps to remove dead skin cell buildup on the skin’s surface, so you get a radiant glow. Even though you have oily skin, you might also experience dryness around the cheeks and neck. Taiwanese beauty guru Niu Er recommends patting the toner on these areas in rapid-fire motion. Do this 100 times to inject moisture into your skin without weighing it down.

Now you’ve got the knowledge, you’ll need the right products to help you achieve flawless skin in no time. Whether luxuriously indulgent or affordably practical, these toners are well-known for their consistent performance. In fact, many beauty aficionados consider them as Holy Grail material!
SK-II Facial Treatment Essence
Enriched with more than 90% Pitera (SK-II’s secret ingredient), this ‘Miracle Water’ is a cocktail of nourishing vitamins, amino acids, minerals and organic acids that helps skin renew itself in just 14 days. The smell takes a bit of getting used to, but like many die-hard fans, you’ll soon be so used to it; you won’t even notice it’s there.

Kiehl’s Calendula Herbal Extract Alcohol-Free Toner

Formulated for normal to oily skin types, this alcohol-free toner is enriched with flower extracts and real petals that float in the clear bottle. It’s one of Kiehl’s bestsellers, and rightfully so. Calendula extract soothes irritation and reduces redness, so it’s also perfect for acne-prone skin.

This fluid toner-essence hybrid can be applied two ways: with a cotton pad or directly with your hands. Fermented seaweed extract and hyacinth extract remove dried keratin from the skin to keep it soft and supple, while exfoliating enzymes gently slough off dead skin cells without causing irritation. It doesn’t leave skin feeling sticky or heavy either.

Senka Hoshitsu Lotion
Senka Moisturizing Lotion_ Story
This Japanese-style lotion is supposed to be applied directly onto skin using your fingertips to deliver an intense boost of moisture to skin. Two types of hyaluronic acid and royal jelly penetrate different layers of the skin to give you bouncy, baby-smooth skin instantly. Plus, it’s fragrance-free and free from artificial colours. Good news for all girls: there are two different textures available – rich (pink cap) and fresh (white cap), so you can choose one that works for you!

Etude House Wonder Pore Freshner 7-in-1
Apparently, this is all the rage in Korea, so much so that when it was first launched, it flew off the shelves and was promptly sold out in no time! The clear fluid toner has 7 benefits: deep cleansing, sebum control, pH balancing, pore tightening, brightening, preventing large pores and preventing skin troubles (what a mouthful!). It’s also free from parabens, mineral oil, artificial fragrances, talc and animal ingredients. Phew!

Simple Soothing Facial Toner
For less than RM20, this is as good as it gets. Perfect for all skin types, a mixture of pro-vitamin B5, chamomile, witch hazel and allantoin keeps skin toned and refreshed, never taut and dry. Apply it with a cotton pad after cleansing each morning and evening to balance out your skin’s pH level. If you have oily skin, focus more on the T-zone and chin area to keep excess skin at bay.

Make your own toner!
Get in touch with your inner scientist and try out this DIY toner that lots of girls swear by as a miracle cure for problematic skin. It gently exfoliates without irritating skin, and even lightens pigmentation too.
Apple Cider Vinegar Toner
  • 2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar
  • 4 tablespoons distilled water
The general ratio is 1 part apple cider vinegar and 2 parts water. Remember to make it in small batches as it’s best used fresh, and always use distilled water (store-bought, the usual bottled drinking water) and not tap water to keep it free from contaminants. Mix it up, store it in a spray bottle or glass jar, and use twice a day after cleansing.
