We're Obsessing Over: Niche Organic Skincare Brands

[As published on Emmagem.com HERE]
At Emmagem, we’re about making life more sustainable. Not just from a financial point of view, but also from an environmental stance. But we’re also big on practicality, so no, we’re not going to ask you to drop whatever you’re doing/using and make a beeline for our recommendations. Life is all about finding the right balance.
Beauty products come in all types of formulas, but if you’re stuck in a rut, why not try something organic instead? Personally, I like rotating my skincare regime. When my skin looks (and feels) worse for wear, I take a break from my usual products and follow an organic skincare routine. And because I tend to get bored easily, this is good way to introduce some excitement into my life (haha), since organic skincare products have a shorter shelf life, and they usually don’t contain preservatives, so I have to finish up what I’m using before it expires.
I know you already know about all the big organic brands in the market, so we’re not going there today. Let’s look at some of the niche organic brands that are available in Malaysia, shall we?

Origin: France
Founded by Noémie de Goÿs, Nohem’s philosophy lies in producing skincare and bodycare products that are inspired by beauty rituals around the world, notably Asia, Far North and Africa. The ingredients are also heavily influenced by the rituals, featuring Japanese Lily and Chinese Goji, Lapland Crowberry, Sea Lavender, Moroccan Argan Oil and Rhassoul Clay.
Bonus sustainable living mention: Through La Fondation Amisse, Nohem purchases ingredients from women loving the South at a fair price, allowing them to earn a decent living. Made for women, by women – we like!
In Malaysia, Nohem is available exclusively at Celebrity Beaute. Find out more info here.

Arise Swiss Alpine
Origin: Switzerland
The Swiss are renowned for their beauty products because of the clean environment and the pure, crystal-clear glacier water from the Alps. All Arise products contain its star ingredient, Edelweiss Extract, derived from a protected plant that grows high in the alpine regions. Traditionally-used as a natural medicine, Edelweiss is known to contain extremely high levels of anti-oxidants, which in turn prevent skin from ageing. Edelweiss is also rich in tannins, which traps free-radicals and inhibits cells from oxidation.
Bonus sustainable living mention: Arise does not believe in animal testing, and all its products do not contain chemical colourants, fragrances or parabens. The containers and packaging is also recyclable.
In Malaysia, Nohem is available exclusively at Celebrity Beaute. Find out more info here.

Country of origin: USA
Made from organic Argan Oil from Morocco, Kahina products harness the oil’s rich rejuvenating qualities to care for skin naturally. Founder Katharine L’Heureux fell in love with Argan Oil after a trip to the Moroccan desert, and subsequently decided to help preserve the tradition of using Argan Oil by creating Kahina. Liquid gold, as Argan Oil is also known as, is sourced directly from the Berber women, who use age-old traditional techniques to extract the precious elixir.
Bonus sustainable living mention: Kahina donates a percentage of its profits to support programmes that help improve the lives of the Berber women. The bottles are also adorned with the signatures of Berber women who have helped make the creation of this brand possible.
In Malaysia, Kahina is available at Beauty Hall, Robinsons Mid Valley. Find out more info here

Rahua by Amazon Beauty
Origin: USA
In the 1990s, New York-based hairstylist Fabian Lliguin discovered the secret of Amazonian women. To keep their hair dark and lustrous, they used a potent oil called Rahua, which possessed amazing revitalizing effects. When Llinguin tried the oil on his clients’ hair, he was surprised to notice a huge improvement, and thus Rahua by Amazon Beauty was born. The molecule of Rahua Oil is smaller than conventional hair oils, which allows it to penetrate deeply into the hair’s cortex, repairing it from within.
Bonus sustainable living mention: Amazon Beauty works closely with women from the Amazonian nations, such as Waorani, Achuar, Quichua and Shuar to obtain Rahua and Ungurahua Oils from them at a fair price.
In Malaysia, Rahua is available from Luxola.com. Shipping is free for orders over RM40 but do look out for discounts too.

This brand isn’t just organic, it’s vegan too, which is pretty impressive considering that the makeup is 100% plant-based. The colour pigments are derived from fruits – blackberries for mascara, red wine and pomegranate for lip gloss and cranberry for cheek tint. In place of preservatives, they use ingredients like Japanese Honeysuckle, Thyme, Oregano, Rosemary and Lavender to prolong the shelf life of the products.

Origin: Taiwan
ERH was founded by Michelle Sung in 2006, who was concerned about the possibility of cancer due to a family history of breast cancer. She wanted her daughter to use skin and bodycare products without worrying about any side effects, and thus decided to make her own products. Putting her medical background to good use, Sung created the first-ever product for ERH – a deep-hydrating lipbalm using food-grade ingredients. Since then, the product line has expanded to a mind-boggling number, and it’s highly-raved about by top beauty bloggers in Taiwan.
Bonus sustainable living mention: The brand goes by a 4 Free (alcohol-free, animal ingredients-free, mineral oil-free, paraben/preservative-free), 26 Not Added (26 harmful fragrances as classified by the European Commission not added), 102 Out (102 substances declared by the Japanese Ministry to cause skin disorders are out) philosophy to ensure product safety and affinity.
