Instant 15-minute Skin Fixes

There are bad skin days, and then there are days when you just feel like maybe you should call in sick because you look like s***. Thankfully there’s hope, and it doesn’t take a ridiculous amount of time to show results. We asked Stephanie Yong, professional aesthetician and certified wellness consultant, for tips on how to fix your skin in just 15 minutes.

If you have dull skin…

Dull skin is usually caused by dead skin cell buildup. Your skin is supposed to renew itself every 28 days, but due to factors like lifestyle, diet and more, sometimes the renewal process isn’t that smooth.
Fix it!
  1. Use a gentle exfoliating scrub to remove dead skin cells from skin’s surface. This helps to detox skin and promote blood circulation.
  2. Apply the scrub on damp skin and massage gently in circular movements. Don’t forget to exfoliate your neck and lips too!
  3. Dab skin dry with a clean towel and apply facial serum in upwards strokes. Use a little pressure to ‘lift’ skin.
  4. Follow with a generous layer of cream or gel mask and leave on for about 15 minutes for the goodness to sink in.
  5. Rinse off and apply your skincare products as you normally would.

If you have dehydrated skin…

Despite our humid climate, dehydration is one of the biggest skin concerns women face. Fasting, not drinking enough water, sweating, and alcohol consumption are some common culprits of dehydration.
Fix it!
  1. After cleansing, apply a gel-based hydrating mask all over face and neck.
  2. Leave on for 10 minutes.
  3. Before rinsing off, massage skin gently to promote circulation.
  4. Pat try and follow with your usual skincare application.

If you have acne flare-ups…

Acne-prone skin requires more care than normal skin, but with a bit of hard work, you’ll notice results. Don’t overuse oil control or acne treatments, which strip away skin’s natural oils, making it overcompensate with even more sebum!
Fix it!
  1. If you have to pop your pimple, make sure your hands and tools are well-sanitized. Antibacterial wipes come in handy.
  2. After popping the pimple, disinfect the area with a mixture of Dettol and water. Dab it on the wound with a cotton bud.
  3. If you don’t have Dettol, you can use freshly-squeezed lemon diluted with water. It will sting, but it prevents bacteria from spreading.
  4. For a more long-term solution, drink more water, eat more fruits and avoid heaty food and supplements.

If you have a bad sunburn…

Never, ever scrub your skin to get rid of the peeling skin! This aggravates your skin, which is already more delicate than usual due to the sunburn. The most important thing you should do is to try and cool down your skin.
Fix it!
  1. Soak cotton pads in alcohol-free toner (you can also try rosewater or thermal water), place them in a ziplock bag and store in the fridge.
  2. After cleansing skin, remove the cotton pads from the fridge and place them on your skin. This cools down and hydrates skin.
  3. It’s important to rehydrate skin after a sunburn, so apply a nourishing cream mask to replenish lost moisture.
  4. You can also dab calamine lotion on affected areas to instantly soothe skin, but do this in the evening as it leaves powdery blotches on skin.
